Hunter and I took our tandem out into the Italian countryside today enjoying the sunshine and warm temps. We rode 10 miles then found a quaint "bistro" in Longare where we feasted on pasta and grilled chicken. On our return ride to our "home" in Rebecca's house I marveled at the surrounding hills, which can only be seen on a clear day. I was reminded of the 121st Psalm, which I am currently attempting to memorize,
"I lift up my eyes to the hills-where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip-he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you-the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, or the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm-he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. "
What a marvelous reassurance that we are protected by God no matter what our circumstances!
Sometimes it is difficult to understand a God that never sleeps, since sleep is so necessary to us. Personally, when I don't "slumber" well I tend to be short-tempered, a bit lazy, and not much fun to "be around". On the otherhand, after 8+ glorious hours of deep rest I am ready to "conquer my mountains", face the "giants", toil long hours. Anyone out there sympathize?
Even though we are created in the image of God, He knew the human body would need rest, where as His Spirit never needs sleep. He is all powerful, all knowing, ever present, and NEVER shuts His eyes! Thankfully, we can always communicate with Him and He with us-even in the middle of the night, which is my habit when I just can't sleep.
Praise the Lord that He is ALWAYS available!
